Poll: Drive units.

Poll: Drive units.

Hello all,
I was planing on ordering a Model S85 in Sept. The recent discussion on Drive Unit replacements has got me a little concerned, and I might wait a while longer before ordering one. But, I don't want to wait. So, I'm putting up this poll to help me and, probably, others decide. This is a poll only. Comments, conjecture, etc. should go in other threads.

If you've never had a problem, I would especially like to know that, too. Here goes.

1. How long have you had your MS?

2. What model is it?

3. How many miles on it now?

4. Have you had the drive unit replaced?

5.If so, at what mileage? Please note the number of times and at what mileage for each, if more than once.

6.For what reason, i.e. noise, clunking, or outright failure.

7. If you have had problems, are you still glad you bought the car? (Still grinning?)

8. If you have more info about your experiences that you feel is helpful for us, who are about to buy one, please go ahead.

When this thread peters out, I will post the results.

Thank you,

Tony

It's a data point, but probably not worth much since my car is so new. It's an S85, VIN 31799, delivery was in March 2014. It's got about 3,600 miles on it now, and no noise at all that I have noticed.

TonyR63 | July 15, 2014

Thanks. that helps.

SergeyS | July 15, 2014

My drive unit was replaced at 14000km (9 month of ownership of P85 model) due to noise.
Drive Unit aka engine of MS is not like gasoline engine on ICE cars. It's relatively small part which is easy to replace and it does not affect vehicle aftermarket price or performance.
I'm SO HAPPY THAT my original Drive unit failed !!!! The new DU installed on my car completely changed behavior of the car in a good way. Better (smoother) acceleration, less high frequency noise during extreme loads, better control on very low speeds. I'm sure inverters are tweaked somehow.

Basically I have got free upgrade (the old one was OK, just a bit noisy on speeds above 50mph).

NKYTA | July 15, 2014

1. How long have you had your MS?

19 months

2. What model is it?

P85

3. How many miles on it now?

13+K

4. Have you had the drive unit replaced?

Nope.

8. If you have more info about your experiences that you feel is helpful for us, who are about to buy one, please go ahead.

You are missing out big time if you don't buy one, cuz you can't have this :-)

jbunn | July 15, 2014

Tony,

Sounds like you've been reading articles from some of the TSLA stock shorts.

I have a 60. Had her for just short of 18 months. 14K miles. NO issues. Most enjoyable car I ever had. Zero noise.

omarsultan.ca.us | July 15, 2014

Tony:

Stop feeding the trolls--I assume you have good intentions, but your poll is going to get translated to something like "80% of Tesla owners polled have drive unit problems" on Seeking Alpha or some such.

O

Trekker56 | July 15, 2014

S60 VIN 8293 15k miles no issues

TonyR63 | July 15, 2014

@omarsultan

Actually, I suspect that most responders will have had no problems, which should spike the SA guns.

carlk | July 15, 2014

P85+ with 4500 miles and no issues.

@jbunn This poll could just help debunk that FUD. You only hear people reporting problems but no one will come out say anything when there is no issue. That always create an impression that a disproportionally high number or cars have the problem.

TonyR63 | July 15, 2014

However, omarsultan, you have a point.

So, all may respond to me privately at anthonyrc@gmail.com. This is a "junk" email account, and I don't really care who has this address.

Thank you,

Tony

Are you expecting 40k replies?

DickB | July 15, 2014

My MS 85 born on December 2012 and died from a hit and run accident on May 2014. It had 15000 miles and no problems with it at all. I did order a new MS P85 this time which I’ll get this August.

1. How long have you had your MS?

about 6 months

2. What model is it?

P85+

3. How many miles on it now?
4500

4. Have you had the drive unit replaced?

Yes.

5.If so, at what mileage? Please note the number of times and at what mileage for each, if more than once.

3000 or so

6.For what reason, i.e. noise, clunking, or outright failure.

clunking

7. If you have had problems, are you still glad you bought the car? (Still grinning?)

Yes. I emailed Tesla about the clunk, the next day they came by my office, dropped a loaner and by the end of the day my car was back, detailed and with the drive unit replaced. I am confident that if any other drive unit problems surface they will be taken care just as quickly.

8. If you have more info about your experiences that you feel is helpful for us, who are about to buy one, please go ahead.

I encourage you to go ahead with the purchase. There is likely a quality problem with some drive units (the issue is quite common) but no doubt Tesla will address it with minimal impact to us owners.

TonyR63 | July 15, 2014

Captain Zap:

God, I hope I don't get 40k responses - 40 max maybe.

omarsultan.ca.us | July 15, 2014

LOL

Look at ti this way, its 40K potential places to charge if you ever end up in a jam. :)

AmpedRealtor | July 15, 2014

1. How long have you had your MS?

Delivered on 8/24/13, almost 11 months.

2. What model is it?

P85

3. How many miles on it now?

11,500 miles (approx)

4. Have you had the drive unit replaced?

Yes.

5. If so, at what mileage? Please note the number of times and at what mileage for each, if more than once.

First replacement was at approx 500 miles, 2nd replacement at approx 8,500 miles.

6. For what reason, i.e. noise, clunking, or outright failure.

Excessive noise above 65 MPH. The noise was of a low frequency, droning nature as if a truck has pulled up next to you.

7. If you have had problems, are you still glad you bought the car? (Still grinning?)

Yes, I am more concerned with the buildup of dust in my tail light than I am the drive units.

8. If you have more info about your experiences that you feel is helpful for us, who are about to buy one, please go ahead.

Service is first rate, so if you should encounter any issues you will be taken care of. I've received a Model S loaner every single time and my inconvenience, if you can even call it that, has been minimal. Sometimes things happen, but Tesla always does what's right in my experience. I would not let this issue keep you from buying a Model S.

AndyO | July 15, 2014

@TonyR63: I started the other private thread which is focused on whether older problems have been corrected and are not showing up anymore. For the benefit of any other owners, I changed the title to be more accurate and it’s now:

diegoPasadena | July 15, 2014

This poll might be of interest for investors because of the costs to the company, but for potential owners it is completely irrelevant. Most owners have not had an issue, and those who have, got a new drive train installed along with a complete service. During that time, most drove a loaner Model S that was delivered to them when theirs was picked up for service. I cannot imagine how anyone's purchase decision would be negatively affected by this. If anything, it would boost my confidence in the company and make me move forward more quickly.

Amazing car, No regrets

Captain_Zap | July 15, 2014

There is no way to know the costs to Tesla. The units are modular. They are replaced with remanufactured units and it could be a component in the unit from another manufacturer that had issues, if any.

Also, the units may have been replaced pre-emptively for research or diagnostic purposes.

This has been discussed before.

No problems with drive unit.
This is the most awesome car I have ever owned and at 68 years there have been many. I will never go back to an ICE car. The service is something I wish every car owner could experience just once and if they did dealerships would be out of business sooner rather than later.
I doubt you will ever regret purchasing a Tesla.

TonyR63 | July 15, 2014

Thank you every one. Fortunately, I did not get 40k responses, not even 40.

I was very concerned about what I had read about this issue. Even those few who had problems love the car and raved about the service. So, I will go ahead and get one. Your answers were very helpful.

Thank you,

Tony

No drive unit replacement. In fact, have never taken it in for service other than when I was asked to as warning came on that ended up to be nothing. Might bring it in next week for my first time, just for a few rattles. I feel embarrassed to bring it in for that but I would like to check out the local service center. :)

Tesla Service is so good because they are trying hard not to make money, so they load on the extras. \:)

AndyO | July 16, 2014

@diegoPasadena: This poll, and the other similar one, is of interest to owners who are about to run out of mileage warranty and live in a state that doesn't allow purchase of the extended warranty. Luckily, my own mileage is low but I'm hoping Tesla can work it out with Fla so that I can buy an extended warranty before my 4 years is up. I plan to keep this car for a long time to justify paying the purchase price. My drive train replacement was with a re-manufactured unit but I wholly trust Tesla that it is better than the one delivered with my car. I just want to have the extra 4 years of insurance and/or see stats that show the issues are being resolved and not recurring in the newer drive train units.

Just looking at this poll, looks like the owners who have had their drive units replaced are the ones who own the P85 and P85+ Like TonyR63, I`ll also be ordering my Model S 85 in September (assuming I like the test drive). :)
