If I read the new Design Studio correctly even if you are P#1 getting an 85 KWH battery you will be waiting till at least January for your car if you do not order the active air suspension. If this is indeed correct all of those who are getting either of the smaller batteries with standard suspension will be in line behind all the larger batteries with standard suspension and lower P numbers with the standard suspension queue starting Jan 2013. Please correct me if I misunderstand the implications of them not starting standard suspension production till Jan 2013.

@gianni - they just stopped including the $7500 federal tax rebate in the base price. Much more honest this way IMO.
What happened to the banana leaf? Interior options in the new design studio show Piano Black, Obeche Wood, and Lacewood.

Love the new studio! I concur on the bananaleaf comment. I really liked that look. S#849 is designed! Would like to lobby Tesla for a suppercharging station in the Lansing, MI area to make charging a snap midway in my trip to visit family.

@ddruz, I guess you are right here ... you can't get your car before Jan 2012, no matter what your order is, if you do not have additional $1,500 to spare on the suspensions. (I hope that's not the ace Elon has up his sleeve).
@Brian, I was disappointed that there is no mention on supercharging equipment for 230 mile battery packs. You can still add it as an option, but without knowing the price.

As with all these announcements, thou shall not despair. As I read it, that's the worst case scenario and the promise they are confident to keep under almost all circumstances, from today's perspective. If all goes smooth with the ramp up of the primary options, I venture to predict that regular suspension option will become available a lot earlier than announced.
Of course, I only take this view b/c at the bottom of my heart I hope that I will see my Model S #P3 in Europe a bit earlier than expected from today's perspective... ;-)

Grey leather not entering production until November. Bummer. At P4510 I don't know that it makes a big difference for my arrival date but still...not welcome news. I just want the car before 12/31 so I dont run the risk of not getting my $7500 from the Feds due to a potential shift in the political winds.

I can't see where the air suspension affects delivery dates. Where in the Design Studio does it say that?
Off to the right (with the pricing), if you select certain options, an "i" appears. Clicking on that shows delays (if any). For example, gray leather interior show a Dec. '12 start date.

I am with Brant, the potential shift in the political winds makes me want to spend $1,500 so I don't lose $7,500. Besides everyone in my family and my job is looking forward to seeing my S in Nov. 2012.
Does anyone know what XM Satellite Radio preparation means? I've never had satellite radio before but I would sure like to have it. If I'm not wrong, I thought it was a feature that was standard on the Model S. All what is included in the Sound Studio Package belongs to the Tech Package at no extra cost IMO. I'm probably not going to go for the SSP, and find a way to upgrade my hard drive (if possible).
VB and the likes might be right after all not to expect any freebies from Elon's aces. He's sure more interested in satisfying investors.
Any else have trouble accessing the new design studio? I've tried clearing browser cache, both Chrome and IE, laptop and iPhone but can't access most of the new design options...
@ MandL I believe I read somewhere that the banana leaf was no longer available and that they would be finding a replacement. I guess the "Obeche Wood" is what they've replaced it with.
I'm using a 'new' iPad to run the design studio, and it seems to work fine until I trigger a dialog box which says, "SUCCESS You've unlocked the bonus views!" which has a close box and an OK button, neither of which have any effect.
Our configuration specialist told us the Banana Leaf was dropped because of poor results during durability testing. The Obeche Wood did well during the durability testing and is the replacement for Banana Leaf. Those that have already configured a Model S with with Banana Leaf, like us, have to make a new decor selection.
According to TM rep......the Obeche wood will be a similar color to the lacewood. I would prefer a burled walnut option.
If you do a search in google about continental air suspension on audi allroad result are mostly about ;conversion kit ;expensive ;leak ; problem huge deception for me more than 2 years of waiting because i want a simple and reliable car.
Without grey leather (I was going with black body) I am going with my other favorite; metallic green and tan interior. Anyone note that the interior photos for the dash look less yellow orange ? It is more of the light saddle I hoped for. It looks like the side view of the seats still has that older odd color to me though.
Brian H- grey leather also has an I which says goes into production Nov 2012 and may cause a delay.
The "Features" page now says the battery ranges are for 60 mph while the "Options & Pricing" page says the battery ranges are for 55 mph. I don't remember a discrepancy between the two before the new Design Studio went up. Is my memory faulty or has there been a change on the "Features" page not reflected on the "Options & Pricing" page?
The specs page says "Eight way, power adjustable front seats". Since there is no option for seats, I would assume this becomes standard on all Model S.
I guess I should have said that the Design Studio does not clearly offer the "12-way, power adjustable, heated seats" stated on the options and Pricing page. Or is it simply implied by choosing Nappa Leather?
Leather = 12-way, microfiber = 8-way. The specs page is for base car, which is the microfiber.
I think colors have shifted slightly with new design studio, overall better. It does make most options look really good.

I noticed in the Design Studio that I could load both cars that I had previously saved, but also a car with my Reservation number attached. I hadn't seen this car before - is this the car that they think that I'm ordering? If I alter this car (change exterior/interior color, options, etc) will that change my actual order?
mklcolvin, I would like an answer to that same question. I have not even dared click on the one with the reservation number. I don't know what chain reaction it might set off.

In a previous post I quoted from a study contained in a National Institutes of Health online database, indicating that Obeche wood should be considered a health hazard capable of causing asthma and hives (hives just from contact with the wood). I realized after posting that the statement might be interpreted as an official position of NIH. It was not. Rather, it is a conclusion contained in an abstract of an observational study reported by NIH.
That doesn't lessen the concern, however.
Beyond the hazard to Tesla owners (and much more so to the production line workers who will be handling this product day after day), apparently this wood is harvested predominately in countries with few if any environmental or worker protection standards.
On the other hand the tree grows fast, is prolific in a variety of suboptimal conditions, and the wood is cheap.
Obeche is a yellow orange color. They have chosen, just like the lacewood, to stain it for whatever reason. For me, natural lacewood is quite beautiful, but not what they have done to it. I am an amateur woodworker and have done a lot with lacewood or " silky oak" ( not a true oak). The natural wood is pinkish in color and goes rusty brown with time. Ver attractive.

As a driver under anything close to normal circumstances, you won't be in contact with the wood or its dust. Some woods have toxic properties, more often when breathing in the dust while cutting. Once the wood is processed and sealed so you can't stain it with spilled coffee, etc., you won't be able to touch it or breathe it in. No health hazard for you.
I've worked with some woods with various levels of toxicity and had no problems, maybe because I was wearing a breathing mask and goggles. I can only assume Tesla is buying the product already finished. I have no idea what is happening at their suppliers.
I don't really understand why wood should be in a car at all. Seems to me it's kind of an annoying throwback to 18th century styling. In Louis XV's day the height of style was cherubs on each corner of the carriage. This fashion statement continued until early automobile makers found that the wind resistance was too high. They changed the four cherubs to one hood ornament. The hood ornament has now mutated to a logo on most cars (I think RR still has Nelly in her nighty on the hood).
I, too, do some woodworking and think a nicely finished wood looks exquisite. I read that obeche wood is a hardwood but is relatively soft and easy to dent. I suspect the finish is hard so denting will not occur. Maybe I can import some obeche and make a center console.
When I looked up Obeche wood I found that it is commonly used for the interior of saunas in places where the skin may be in contact with wood for dermatalogical reasons. It holds up well in a damp, warm environment as well.
There is the potential for an allergic reaction in some individuals for most types of wood products. Some woods have a more robust built-in defense mechanism to prevent attack from other organisms. It doesn't look like Obeche is one of them and reactions are relatively rare.
I haven't found Obeche on any threatened or endangered list for species, habitat or environmental conditions.
It seems Tesla has been keeping these matters in mind when developing an interior finish that appeals to those that like the beauty and esthetics of a wood finish.
All the other interior trim options look a bit dark or stark for the lighter interior finish options. Most folks could get on board with a walnut finish but it is becoming quite rare and extremely expensive.
