* = On March 1, 2011, a Tesla member posted, "Got the following info from Tesla some days ago: In Europe they have reduced the Signature down to 500 and approximately 70 have been reserved." While 55 is a confirmed/posted reservation number from this forum, the 70 has yet to be verified by the actual European reservation holder.

@qwk

I agree that most of (if not all) is speculation. I was responding to @DavidM. I prefer not to conjecture (I'm the guy that records actual data :-) ).

One other point: I'm not saying that Tesla is "offering exclusive options on 1,500 cars." Rather, I believe Telsa is fully loading the first 1,500 cars and stamping "Signature Series" on these cars. I believe whatever options come "standard" in the Signature Series can/will be possible to have in a General Production Model S (without the "Signature Series" engraving, of course).

And clearly Tesla's incentive to fully load the first 1,500 (including a 300 mile battery) is obvious from every perspective (financial, marketing, branding, public perception, etc., etc.).

Hopefully that clarified my point(s).

Hi michiganmodels
Have you the delivery time on the R1-R218?

gkimmcgary | April 30, 2011

I have a signature model s on reserve, # 279, in Utah, America!

michiganmodels | May 1, 2011

@nilsjohanf - I'm unclear of the R1-R218, but I did receive some delivery news this weekend (read below).

@gkimmcgary - Congrats! Only 11 months to go (read below).

I just returned from The Berkshire Hathaway shareholder meeting in Omaha Nebraska (I'm a Class B shareholder, not a Class A Shareholder). To my surprise, Tesla allowed shareholders to test drive Roadsters during the meeting in the Marriott hotel parking lot. After the meeting, I stopped by the Marriot and spoke with the two Tesla reps (one was from Colorado and the other from Chicago). They both lit up when I told them I reserved Signature #249 (they were also delighted to see me sporting my Tesla Track Jacket at the Berkshire Hathaway Meeting-for those who do not know, Berkshire Hathaway purchased a significant holding in BYD, a Chinese automotive company that is/will manufacture EVs). Unsolicited, the Colorado rep told me and I quote, "at S249, you'll get your car in early April." I responded that Jerome Gillian quoted March 2011 deliveries begin.* So, for those interested when deliveries actually start: I've been told S249 will be early April 2012.

If I had to wager on the timeline, it would be as follows (this is my educated guess only):
2011 1st Quarter: Release Alpha Build, Alpha testing begins.
2011 2nd Quarter: Alpha testing concludes at quarter end.
2011 3rd Quarter: Release Beta Build, Beta testing begins.
2011 4th Quarter: Beta Testing concludes quarter end. Announce Model X, accept reservations.
2012 1st Quarter: Model S production begins. Model S Signature delivery begins at quarter end.
2012 2nd Quarter: Model S Signature delivery / Model S General Production delivery begins.

Running Grand Total:

4817

@Michigan

Just curious about you being a stock member, I earlier this year bought some also, I doubt I have enough invested to be recognized, so my question is what is a class B stock holder?

michiganmodels | May 2, 2011

@msiano17 - Berkshire Hathaway class B shares trade at $82.00 per share. Class A shares trade at roughly the price of a Tesla Roadster Sport ($123,000K). Class B shares are roughly 1 / 1,500 the price of Class A shares. There is essentially no difference between the shares. Warren Buffet issued class B shares because 1) he does not believe in splitting stock (although the B shares have experienced two stock splits in the last seven years or so for reasons you can look up, I'll transition this post back to the Model S) 2) when the Class A shares reached the 100K price point per share, it prohibited non-institutional investors from buying stock.

If you meant you purchased Tesla stock, there is only one class traded on the NASDAQ (TSLA). The connection between Berkshire Hathaway and Tesla is: Tesla showcases the Roadster at events such as the US Open (at Pebble Beach last year, for example) and the Berkshire Hathaway Shareholder Meeting to attract potential (and likely) candidates to purchase the Roadster (and reserve the Model S).

My brother reserved a Model S today: P 3,779.

Trnsl8r | May 2, 2011

Took the plunge today and can tell you that US production model is now up to 3771.

Timo | May 2, 2011

I heard from somewhere that Tesla would be doing something like 5000 in first year and 20k second, so we already have nearly entire first year production reserved. I can't wait to see one in reality.

@ Michigan

Thanks for the explanation. Ya I just bought into TSLA stocks a couple months back, figured next year will be a boom period in their value.

@ Timo - Ya one of their press releases stated they are aiming for 5000 units in 2012 so it is real nice to see almost all 5000 being bought out already.

Confirmation #3766 for US general production Model S on May 2. Thank you tax refund.

David M. | May 5, 2011

It's funny that we're a year before production begins, and paid reservations for the Tesla Model S already exceed Volt and Leaf purchases combined (which is about 3,000 units thru April 2011)! Even more amazing is that I'm comparing a luxury vehicle (Model S) to two economy cars.
As a reservation holder, I am anxious to see feature comparisons between the (P)Model S 300mi, and the (S)Model S 300mi.

michiganmodels | May 5, 2011

@David M. - Agreed. Consider this: the Model S reservations are 100% consumer interest driven; Tesla has not pursed the reservations. Elon Musk and Deepak Ahuja stated on yesterday's earnings call that Tesla expended $0.00 on marketing and advertising efforts for the Model S. In fact, Musk went further to say Tesla product representives are specifically instructed to solely focus sales efforts on the Roadster. Whereas GM and Nissan have spent resources on television ads, sales initiatives, and other marketing efforts, Tesla has yet to begin a marketing campaign for the Model S.

Regarding the feature comparison between the general production and Signature Series: several of us have commented above (scroll up/back).

Finally, Elon Musk reported Quarter 1 Model S reservation worldwide totaled 4,600. For those of you scoring at home, this thread totaled 4,646 reservations worldwide on March 28, 2011. So, we were not that far off...

Nicu | May 5, 2011

@ michiganmodels
he said over 4600 by the end of April, not 1st quarter

michiganmodels | May 5, 2011

@Nicu
You are correct. 4,600 through April 2011. I misread/misheard.

I believe the count is still somewhat accurate: we have: 4,657 through May 3rd (I know you were not disputing the accuracy, just correcting my "Quarter 1" comment).

Volker.Berlin | May 6, 2011

Elon Musk and Deepak Ahuja stated on yesterday's earnings call that Tesla expended $0.00 on marketing and advertising efforts for the Model S. (michiganmodels)

This statement is a bold one. They had a product launch. They have a website, including a couple of pages and image galleries dedicated to the Model S. They have a paper brochure. They had a few shows, including Geneva recently. They have a program for reservation holders, sending them updates and little welcome packs. All this does not come for free, even though it is admittedly not comparable to a typical full-fledged automobile marketing campaign.

Of course, since they do not have any Model S sales at the moment, it is easy to book these expenses on the "general brand reputation" budget which may even help to sell a couple of extra roadsters. Still I do not like it when people state pseudo accurate numbers like $0.00. Did they really say that, or was this your way of expressing that they did not have a Model S campaign yet?

michiganmodels | May 6, 2011

@Volker EU#P1
That is what was said, verbatim: http://ir.teslamotors.com/

I agree Tesla probably have a lot of those expenses listed under "S,G,A." However, that is how Elon and Deepak stated it.

Michael S | May 6, 2011

Just so you all know Tesla plays pretty loose with the number of cars sold and reserved. I am Roadster 2.0 owner #951. But I know they burned at least 40 numbers before getting to my car. They may have burned a few more since. I am Signature series reservation holder #99.

As far as the first year's production of the S series, I was told a year ago that they would be producing only the 2000 Signature model cars first and then and only then would they be begin mass production. Now of course this could have all changed since then, or maybe they were lying at the time. I don't know. Only time will tell. They still haven't even set a firm price on the Signature series and until they do, most people are not going to be comfortable making a reservation for the high-end model.

We are at 4903 Total Reservations thus far. Following in Michigan's footsteps, please take calculation with a grain of salt as numbers are just based off of what we receive through posts.

Already pushing the 5000 limit for first year production.

clea | May 6, 2011

You have to remember that not all of these reservations can/will be delivered the first year anyways. For instance, the right hand drive cars will not go into production until mid 2013.

Timo | May 7, 2011

From that list only Australia, Hong Kong, from Asia Japan and from Europe United Kingdom have right hand drive, so that is tiny portion, less than 200 I imagine.

clea | May 7, 2011

point is that the door is not closed yet to reserve now and receive by 2012 ... they may even hit the other end of the production numbers they state in the FAQ. There they say they will do 5000-7000 in the first year. Or is it that nobody believes they will hit the upper end of that estimate?

Hi michiganmodels,

My original number of P448 (Europe/The Netherlands) on March 24th (confirmed by e-mail) has dropped amazingly low to P305 on May 12th(as shown at the website). Is this sequence starting to become a kind of countdown, instead of a reservation list? Our do that many people cancel their reservations? Not a very good sign for my TSLA stock, but on the positive side a good outlook for sooner being able to drive :)

Volker.Berlin | May 11, 2011

TSLA stock is healthy, no need to worry (my opinion). If it makes you feel better, you may assume that most of the dropped-out P numbers have upgraded to Signature models! ;-)

Timo | May 11, 2011

I think that most of the drops in P -series are caused by people changing their order to "S"ignature -series. If they were getting 300 mile version anyway they just put a bit more money aside to get their cars a bit earlier.

Timo | May 11, 2011

Forgot to mention that in Europe that isn't necessarily true, because in Europe car costs at least 20% more than in US + most of us here are not getting any kind of government tax refunds or stuff like that, and 300 mile version final cost might have scared people off. $60k+20% is $72k, $80k+20% is $96k. We are looking at Model S which has almost same price-tag as Roadster has in US.
