App won't connect

App won't connect

I've only had my car a few days, but I'm really loving it. I've given many test drives and answered hundreds of questions. I enjoy closing my "Tesla sales pitch" by whipping out my phone and showing off the app. This afternoon the app wouldn't connect to my car. No messages, just the spinner forever. I just tried again from home, several hours later and still the same. I've killed and restarted the app (iPhone), tried from my iPad, and rebooted the center console from the car and still nothing.

Anyone else see this? Any ideas?

This is really inconvenient since I have to walk all the way out to my garage to make sure it's still there.

Same thing here. It was working yesterday. Looks like they are having server issues.

Ronald | March 8, 2013

Same thing here. I called and they said they weren't aware of any server issues. But I did everything. Just the spinning wheel. The only thing I can think of is a server issue on their end.

Same here

DouglasR | March 8, 2013

Same here. Also, Bluetooth isn't connecting to my phone.

jchangyy | March 8, 2013

Same here. was working earlier this morning

Alex K | March 8, 2013

Works for me via the iPhone App at 17:50MST

Maybe people should put the time in so we can judge when the problem occurs and corrects itself?

DouglasR | March 8, 2013

I think they just fixed it.

Make sure the care is in a place with fairly good 3G connection. Sublevel parking garages not a great place to connect.

rloehler | March 8, 2013

Works for me now!

Try your full email address. Mine did not work with just my user name but, started working again when I used the full email address that is linked to my tesla account.

Happens on occasion. I noticed that it happened when my car was in a location with poor cell coverage.

nickjhowe | March 8, 2013

There was a server problem this evening.

jlrush | March 9, 2013

I've had it happen where the circle around the car symbol appears then a notice pops up that says unable to connect with options stating "retry" or "account". Once it happened where the car is circled and then it said "this may take a few minutes", but connection doesn't happen. The last variety happened only once on Tuesday evening, not since. The other variety happens occasionally, eventually connecting.

I lost app connectivity, touchscreen map, and slacker/Internet radio last night while showing 3 bars on my 3G connectivity. I rebooted 3 times and it finally came back up.

While we're on the topic of the app, I imagine your significant others also use the app on their phones, right? Possible to have simultaneous log-ins? Will my logging in kick my wife offline, and vice versa? Any problems/issues with multiples?

boerlin | December 3, 2013

Hi, just same problem appeared to me this morning. Again server issues?

boerlin | December 4, 2013

Seemd to be just a hiccup. worked again today and have done nothing else.

kyleket | December 4, 2013

I'll answer my own question from March, since I'd forgotten all about it, and have now had my S for seven months:

No, there are no issues caused by multiple phones viewing the app for the same car simultaneously.

Thanks, Kyle. You're welcome, Kyle.

Very useful thread thanks to people putting in the time to post so I can judge when the problem occurs and corrects itself. And it isn't my iPhone.

paul.cleary | January 8, 2015

Had the same problem last night and this morning 1-8-15

cbell | January 8, 2015

marenavrn | January 8, 2015

From an earlier post:

Changes in Tesla's servers are incompatible with the current version of VisibleTesla
Some users have already been moved to the new servers and VisibleTesla no longer works for them (can't log in). This seems to be mostly in Europe.
In addition to changes in the way logging-in and other functions work, the new servers throttle usage.
Throttling means that if you use the servers a lot, they eventually start dropping requests to reduce load.
Throttling makes the servers appear extremely unreliable and unsuitable for use by apps like VisibleTesla
This throttling will impact the operation of your mobile phone app - not just VisibleTesla

I suspect that this server-side throttling that Tesla is doing now explains the erratic login-behaviour that many people are experiencing with their Mobile App. Sometimes it connects fast, sometimes it won't at all for a while, only to magically work again a couple of hours later. All the while the car and the phone or iPad had flawless and proven internet-connectivity.

I stopped demo'ing the mobile App because it made me look like a donkey's arse on several occasions already (look at this cool app that comes with the car -> connection failed over and over again -> hahaha that App is a joke, it doesn't even work haha)

* should have left out the first three lines concerning VisibleTesla as it's not relevant. Sorry for the confusion i might have caused.

The App works fine on our iPhone 5's but not on my wife's new 6. Does the App work on other 6's?

tezzla.SoCal | January 10, 2015

works fine for me, iphone 6 (@ 10am pst)

May be Tesla servers, but I've also noticed that after just a few uses of the app I have to reset (turn off & on) my phone to get it to work again - could also be a bug in the app itself, a memory block that gets filled but not cleared/updated till the phone is turned off

dvernier | April 25, 2015

No connection with the server tonight. Can't talk to my Tesla.

gchiaram | April 25, 2015

Tesla experienced what appers to have been a DNS hack today. More information in this thread on the TMC forum.

EdwardG.NO2CO2 | April 26, 2015

At least for the Apple app (excluding down time for the Tesla Site) ever since the last update 6.2(2.4.136) the app has been inconsistent connecting via WiFi. Most of the time when I come home and the car switches to WiFi I cannot connect using the app at all. I have to go back in the garage futz with the WiFi connection before it will finally connect. I do have "always connected on" even though it always suggests it is not in the error message! My wife's Tesla that has not been upgrade to 6.2 continues to function flawlessly!

Very frustrating !!!

NKYTA | April 26, 2015

I'm not having any issues connecting under 6.2, but I've selected "always connected". Well, aside from the hours when the site was hacked.

Brian H | April 28, 2015

I wondered. Couldn't access DNS for the site, checked with my ISP, but in the meantime it came back.

roxanne | May 21, 2015

I have had erratic connections since I received my car. How close does the phone need to be to connect reliably?

williamfrisella | May 19, 2016

I can sign into my iPhone Tesla app and all works OK but when I try to use SUMMON I get an error message that reads "unable to connect to your vehicle". Any help out there on this problem? Thank you.
